General Statement of Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Publications Supervisor, this position works with other directory staff members to perform sales calls and visits for print and online advertising for the department. In addition to sales, this position is also responsible for providing an exceptional level of customer service to Swiftel clients. Performs proofing, routine filing and data entry as required for the achievement of department goals. Position must represent the company in a professional manner. Position must maintain a very high level of attention to safety rules and policies established by Brookings Municipal Utilities and Swiftel Communications. Position must support the mission statement of Brookings Municipal Utilities in serving our customers with reliable services in a prompt and courteous manner.


Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for completing all sales assignments and activities for the department.
  2. Performs sales calls for print and online advertising.
  3. Responsible for handling sales correspondence with clients and following through on sales assignments.
  4. Prospects and keeps accurate list of new area businesses for print and online advertising.
  5. Provides a high level of customer service for the department.
  6. Responds to client inquiries regarding directory advertisement placement & advertising sales issues.
  7. Maintains, updates and proofs on-line advertisements.
  8. Assists with contracts, proofs and editing of all white page sections.
  9. Assists in proofing all business & residential listings and display advertising.
  10. Assists with advertising copywriting and graphic design per client request.
  11. Responsible for communicating with other Directory staff members to ensure accuracy of customer advertising requests and placement.
  12. Works with publisher to establish industry contacts and answer questions concerning the published directory.
  13. Organizes and maintains an accurate client database and related sales and advertising documentation.
  14. Works within a team responsible for the overall maintenance and growth of online and print advertising.
  15. Attends training and sales meetings as required to stay current with department activities and goals.
  16. Responsible for maintaining effective communication and relations with other employees.
  17. Performs duties in a manner consistent with safe practices.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. and related work experience.
  2. Demonstrated skills and abilities in sales, customer service and public relations. Directory or publication experience is desirable.
  3. Considerable ability to work within a team environment.
  4. Considerable experience working with the general public.
  5. Employee must be able to resolve issues with clients while maintaining a high level of professionalism.
  6. Ability to focus on details in proofing client information, requests and advertising.
  7. Employee must possess the ability to work on a personal computer and complete data entry.
  8. Ability to plan and organize work.

Language Skills

  1. Ability to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

Certification, Testing and Examination

  1. Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  2. Other such testing as deemed necessary by Brookings Municipal Utilities / Swiftel.

  1. While performing the duties of this position, the employee works in an indoor office environment. Occasional exposure to outside weather conditions when traveling between various company locations.
  2. Normal indoor conditions of heat, humidity and dust.
  3. Position involves regular contact with other employees and members of the public.
  4. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.
