General Statement of Duties

Under the direct supervision of the Electric Construction or Maintenance Foreman, this position is responsible for constructing, maintaining and repairing transmission and distribution power lines, distribution equipment, substations and other electrical facilities and equipment.

 

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Constructs, maintains and repairs transmission and distribution power lines and substations and other electrical facilities and equipment.

  2. Constructs and maintains traffic signal lights and street lights.

  3. Installs electrical cable, transformers, insulators, switches, conduit, breakers, telephone underground facilities, and other electrical equipment.

  4. Strings and pulls electrical cable through ducts, splices cable according to specifications.

  5. Answers trouble calls, analyzes problems and takes corrective action.

  6. Works on energized conductors and/or devices.

  7. Responsible for maintenance of assigned equipment.

  8. Required to perform stand-by duties as assigned.

  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D.

  2. Graduation from vocational/technical school in power line studies preferred.

  3. Employee must have completed or be willing to complete an electrical apprenticeship program in order to be considered an Electric Journeyman Lineman.

  4. Employee must possess knowledge of electrical systems, electrical theory and the operation of equipment used in repairing or building electric power systems.

  5. Employee must possess mechanical aptitude.

  6. Employee must possess knowledge, skills and abilities to read and interpret blueprints and schematics, evaluate information to make decisions or recommendations, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with Utility employees, officials, and the public.

     

Language Skills

  1. Ability to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

  2. Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.

     

Certification, Testing and Examination

  1. Possession of a valid driver’s license.

  2. Possession or the ability to obtain a South Dakota Class A CDL with air breaks license within 60 days of hire.

  3. Other such testing as deemed necessary by Brookings Municipal Utilities / Swiftel.

  2. Frequently required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl.

  3. Required to actively listen and communicate with supervisor, peers and customers.

  4. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.

  5. Excellent hand/eye coordination is required for this position.

  6. Employee is occasionally required to lift, carry, and push/pull up to 70lbs.

  1. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.

  2. Position involves regular contact with other employees and members of the public.
